Future of Work

As students, your aim to take up a particular course rests on two important factors – your area of interest and its career scope in future. While, there are a lot of ways to identify your areas of interest namely your liking for specific subjects, psychometric tests to unearth your passion, education counseling sessions which help you get an understanding of the probable fields that you might do well in, there is very narrow window open for students to discover how the career scope will pan out for a particular field in future.

A Google search may give you results of the kinds of career options available for a course at present. Some blog posts may also give an indicative and predictive guess about how the future would unfold for a particular course but chances are that not many posts would be able to address the topic in a more concrete and confident manner. It is hardly anybody’s fault since accurate future predictions involve taking into account a myriad of factors, a lot of which are unknown in the present.

So, the query remains unsolved. This blog post attempts to answer this question that a lot of students have in their minds about the future career scope of different courses. Before we delve into this deeper, let us first clarify what this blog is not about:

  • Definitive future career predictions about specific courses
  • Jobs available in any particular field in future

As mentioned earlier, predicting the future of any course or field involves a lot of factors like performance of an industry over time, political and social factors, technological changes and disruption and other unknown factors of which we have no clue at present. Among the factors listed here, the most important is the unknown factors about which we don’t know in the present. It is these unknown factors that add the element of uncertainty in any prediction. Who knew in 2019 that the world would be fighting a pandemic in 2020 and 2021? This was an unknown factor that no one saw in 2019 and which derailed a lot of plans of individuals, industries and societies and changed the course of humanity. We still don’t know when this pandemic will get over and how the world look and behave in the new normal post-Covid.

So, now you might be wondering as to how we then plan to write this post. In this post, we aim to talk about the future of work in general. Based on the green shoots we see today, we would like to make some informed predictions about how the future workplace and workforce would look and behave. We would also like to highlight the newer dimensions that might get become part of the core office culture. These are mere indications and are not meant to scare anyone but to inform and empower the reader to make preparations early on. So, here we begin:

  1. Rise of remote work culture – Irrespective of when we will get to live in the post pandemic world, remote culture will definitely be part of it. As per Gartner research of company leaders, some 80 % agreed that they plan to allow employees to work remote. This has massive consequences. It means you could be sitting at your home and reporting to your manager who stays in the other part of the world. You get to spend more time with family, avoid commuting to office every day and still be a valuable asset to the organization.

  2. Integration of Gig economy with the traditional workforce – Gone are the days of full time employment. Gig economy is clearly the winner. It provides much needed flexibility to employees, ensures to integrate workers who let the full time corporate job due to some personal reason, provides flexibility of talent for organizations and most importantly such an arrangement is successful because it is outcome based. No need to spend time doing operational tasks. As long as you are able to deliver the outcome, you are free to do whatever you want with the rest of your time.

  3. Cross cultural teams would be the new normal – One of the consequences of remote work would be the opportunity to work with cross cultural teams. This would be thrilling and challenging at the same time. Culture is one of the most sensitive aspects of a human being. Familiarity breeds trust and collaboration. So, one of the key aspects for a successful cross cultural team would be its ability to sensitize members about other cultures and create a space of mutual understanding. Cultural sensitization could also become one of the important subjects in schools and colleges.

  4. AI to become a key enabler of work and life – With the pace at which developments are being made in Artificial Intelligence, it would be hard to imagine a future without them both at work and home. With smarter tools being integrated to improve the efficiency of workplace, this technology could soon replace a lot of mundane tasks at work. What this also means that there will be enhanced need and scope of skill up gradation to remain relevant and in demand for the times to come.

  5. Data will be the new currency – Data is the new currency. If you take a look around, every website, app and platform is collecting data about your location, preferences, interests, purchase behavior and your opinions. Whoever has this data in the most refined and organized way would be able to rule the world. What does this mean? Data in itself has no use. It is the analysis of this data to find meaningful insights about which products would work more, how to market them, how to influence buying decision, how to stop consumers from going to competition, incentives to motivate buyers to buy etc that makes this data a goldmine. That is why Data will be the new currency.
